Maximum OSAP Grants
If you are thinking about going back to school for a career-focused degree, timing really matters. Get maximum OSAP grants before the August 1 rules change.
The Ontario government is making big changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Beginning August 1, 2026, the balance between grants and loans will change a lot.
If you want to finish school with less student debt, it’s important to know how these changes affect you. Applying before August 1 is the best way to save money. Get your maximum OSAP grants before it’s too late.

What is Changing and affecting Maximum OSAP grants?

Right now, OSAP offers a lot of non-repayable grants. But for study periods starting on or after August 1, 2026, a new funding model will start to help the province meet its long-term goals.
Here’s how the rules are changing:
  • The 25% Grant Cap: Before, you could get up to 85% of your provincial OSAP as a grant. With the new rules, grants will be limited to 25% of your provincial funding. The other 75% will be a loan you need to repay.
  • Career College Grants Ending: If you plan to go to a private career college for a fast, career-focused program, provincial grants will end for programs starting after July 31. All provincial funding for these programs will be loans only.
  • The Good News: The total amount of funding you get will not go down. You will still have enough to cover tuition and living costs. Also, the federal part of OSAP (about 60% of your funding) will stay the same, and you won’t pay interest while you study full-time.

Who is Eligible for OSAP?

Before you apply, make sure you meet the basic residency and status requirements. OSAP is available to Ontario residents of any age who fit into one of these three groups:
  1. Canadian Citizens
  2. Permanent Residents (PR holders)
  3. Protected Persons (such as convention refugees with a valid Notice of Decision)

Why You Need to Apply Now for a Career-Focused Degree

Career-focused degrees and diplomas, such as those in healthcare, technology, supply chain logistics, and engineering technology, are fast ways to get good jobs. But if you wait until August, you will end up with more student debt.
If you enroll in your program and submit your OSAP application for a term that starts before August 1, you avoid the new limits. Your funding will be based on the current rules, so you get more grants and owe less when you graduate.

Your Step-by-Step Action Plan

To make sure you get all the government funding you can, follow this timeline:
1. Choose an OSAP-Approved Program: Start right away. Find and apply to a career-focused degree or diploma at an OSAP-approved public school or career college. Make sure your program starts before August 1, 2026.
2. Tax and Status Documents: Important financial and proof of residency documents are mandatory. Get your 2024 tax return, SIN, and proof of status (Citizen, PR, or Protected Person). If you have dependants, you also need their information. If you are a protected person you must have a valid SIN number and Work permit. Expired SIN and WP will not allow to start applying OSAP funds to study.
3. Submit Your OSAP Application: Do this before July 31. Log in to the OSAP portal and fill out your application for the upcoming term. Don’t wait for your school’s deadline—apply as soon as you are accepted.
4. Review Your Funding Assessment: Once approved, check your OSAP account to see your mix of grants and loans. If you want to reduce your debt, you can accept only the grant and decline the loan.

The Bottom Line: Education is an investment in your productivity, but a larger grant means a faster path to financial freedom after graduation. Don’t let the August 1 rule changes catch you off guard. Apply to enrol in a private career college if you can’t secure your spot to a public school. Plenty of online and flexible Diplomas available for a fresh start your career.
